Welcome back.

So today's video I'm going to show you how to get help when you're using the U Bahn to server operating system while you're at the command line now, to be clear, to be clear in the modern world, the best place that you can go to in order to get help is Google.

That's right, if you if you are a stuck.

If you're trying to figure out what to do at the command line, the best place to go if you are able to g o is to go to google dot com and plug in whatever the hell your search query is, and then see what the hell the Internet has to say.

But it is important to understand that Lennox has built in tools that will try to help you actually use the operating system, because it is important to understand when you're using the Lenox Command line.

One of the reasons that Lennox is hard is simply because you have to type in the appropriate commands know where the the files and folders are No.

What?

The arguments are so on and so forth.

In order to do anything with the operating system, if you type in something a little bit incorrectly, nothing will happen.

It would just fail out, and people will get frustrated.

So there are some some some some built in tools and Lennox to try to help you out with using the operating system on.

I'm going to show you some of those tools today and some of the quirks with them because again, the user experience user experiences.

Oh, so Lennox Oh, eso Lennox.

So what I'm gonna be showing you how to use today is there's a There's a tab auto complete.

So if you start a command, let's say you're you want a list files or something, but you're not exactly sure what to say.

You could simply type in l.

So the commander list files is l s.

So let's say for some reason, you only remember the alley.

Don't remember the anything else you could simply type and l if you hit Tab, that actually doesn't sort of kind of semi auto complete.

Basically, what it does is it gives you all the command options that are available that start with l So, like I f config I have config is how you could get your i p address from the command line and Lenox.

So if for some reason you don't remember it, you could type I or you could type in i f you get hit tab, and then that will show you all the options that are available.

So that's something that will be useful for you.

Then there is something called me What is command?

So you you know, you sit there.

You see all these these commands that are available to you.

Oh, what is any of this one of things that schools you can type in, what is And whatever the command is, what is unless what is I have config.

What is grab or whatever else on Essentially, it will give you a one sentence one sentence synopsis on what the hell this this, uh, this command does on.

So that could be about valuable.

So you're sitting there, you're looking at all the commands.

You're like Well, this command do what I wanted to d'oh you type in what is space where the command is, and it will give you a sentence.

This is with the commandos to go.

Okay, Yeah, That's what I need or no, that's not what I need.

Then we're going to go into man pages.

Good old classic man pages.

Man pages have been around forever.

They're they're one of the the things that came out of the units world of escalate a record manual pages, man pages.

And the idea was that the manual for the UNIX operating system was built into the operating system itself.

Again.

One of the things you have to think about when you're dealing with Lennox world A very important thing to understand when you're doing with Lennox World is that so much of the operating system has things from a time a long time before the Internet.

Where is it?

It's a long time before Facebook a long time before Google a long time before Windows 95.

Ah, long time before that, Even the World Wide Web.

So what man pages were?

Four is imagine a time.

Imagine in the 19 seventies, when you don't have the Internet, you know you can't just go to Google.

You're trying to figure out how to use an operating system.

That what the man pages d'oh is a man.

Pages allowed you to be able to type in a command man and then whatever command is, and then it will go and it will actually give you a printout will give you a write up of what that command does with all the arguments and everything else, and is basically built in documentation into the Lexx operating system.

So that's useful.

And then I'm gonna finally show you help.

Because, of course, in the Lenox World, athletic through it, you can't.

You can't just find one way of doing something and then just do it.

You can't just be like, Hey, man, pages have the manual built into the operating system.

That'll make life easier because you're always you're always gonna have something you're always gonna have somebody say, Well, the way I think this should be done and that's where you get help.

See the type of command I even hired help, and then you get a different form of documentation.

That kind of sort of looks like man pages isn't quite man pages.

They have to do with you a couple of other things with it.

And so help is sort of like a man page.

Kind of, sort of.

And so maybe if you're sitting there, you're trying to figure out information you can't go to Google.

They don't want to go to Google for some reason.

You could type in the man you go to, man.

Paige.

Maybe that doesn't give you the information you want to go to help Paige.

Why are there man pages and help pages apparently comes from the canoe project.

Hey, you remember this canoe?

Beautiful people.

Yeah, apparently comes from that.

The idea.

So So man pages again.

The concept was from the sixties or seventies, and so the help pages of the info pages as they're called, uh, was supposed to be was from the nineties and again, even in the nineties, The Internet isn't what the Internet is today.

And so it was supposed to be like an updated version of man.

Page is supposed be a better way of doing man pages, but it's like a lot of things in technology where we have man pages, man pages, works, everyone knows what the hell Man pages is they come out with these info pages, you go use help and then the Internet comes out of the Google comes out, and so you really get in the modern world.

Did you get people using man pages and get people using Google?

And then you got this weird help stuff in the middle.

But I figured I would show you that because that does come up in a lot of documentation.

Honestly, with all of the use, I would use man pages and it would use Google The help.

I don't know.

I think I look at the hell pages.

I think they look like I think they look horrible.

I think they look like trash.

But that's the wonderful thing about that.

That's a wonderful thing about the Leonard sorrow.

It's not about what I think, whatever the hell you want to use.

So I was.

What's with that?

Let's go over the computer.

Well, boot up an instance of a bone to server, and then I'll show you how these commands actually work.

So here we are, at my computer.

I have ah, virtual box already open.

I have these three instances over here, and I'm just going to grab this.

Who?

Bunching server.

So this is a stock standard.

You bunty server That again?

Basically, I just installed 18.4 Lt s onto this instance, and that is that is what we have.

So it's just a stock standard, Sarah.

So it's booting it up.

It'll take a couple of seconds here just to show you, you know, it is going through the process.

And now with server log in for me, I have Bob.

And again, this is an important thing when you're when you're when you're learning how to do technology when you're learning how to do operating systems just come up with simple Loggins.

Simple Long and I know it sounds horrible.

I know.

And under some people out there that are horrified that I'm using a server log in Bob.

123456 But the nice part about this is it means I always know what the what the user name and what the password is on.

All of my little testing computers, he was one of the biggest pains of the butts is when you get like, oh so cool and you're gonna try to make your testing computer secure, and then you forget what the hell?

The passwords, usernames and passwords are on those computers because you just get too smart for yourself.

Uh, that that gets back.

So just a simple user name and password makes life easy.

So, Bob, 123456 we enter and we go through on this is what we get So it gives us a little bit of information.

Now, one of the plans that I do want to show you.

I'm not going to a video on this.

Just because I'll be using this a lot of anyway during the classes is so when you have a screen like this, one of the problems in the Lenox world is everything gets printed out on the screen.

And then and then basically, what happens is your little command prompt gets gets farther and farther and farther down on the screen, and that could be a pain to look at.

So one of the commands you can use is clear if you use the command clear and hit, enter.

Basically, that clears the screen.

So that gives you a nice clear screen s.

So this is just one of those useful things again depends on what you want to do in life s.

So let's let's use the tab.

You can't really see me use the tab.

So if you know, you know what the tab key is, right?

You know what the tab key is?

All I'm gonna do is I'm just going to get l.

So l so again, one of the commands Lennox, is l s, unless something we'll be using a lot.

So let's just say for some reason, I don't remember what the command is.

Its eyes and l are, I don't know.

That's what I can do, is I can hit Tab and hit tab again.

And for this says, I only put in one letter.

It's saying you don't display all 101 possibilities, so I'll say yes.

And so now this gives me all the possibilities for hell.

There's actually a lot last let the whole market stuff, And then if you see over over there, I can't actually should put my mouse over it.

But if you see along this line over on the second column, you'll see l last.

Oh, Okay.

Well, there's a L s So that's the type of thing that you could do with a tab.

So, like with the i f.

Config so I can type in, Let's say I f like, Oh, is it can't fig Is it complete, Herb?

I don't know.

I hit Tab twice.

And then, as you can see, it's as I f and that's I f config.

So Okay, so it's I f config that that's what about a plug in.

So that's all the tab is.

You know, if you're trying to think about the file editors vim RV type in V, I tab twice, and then he gives us all the options.

Okay, v and I've got them, and then I can figure out what to do.

So, Tab Tab is what gives you this quote unquote auto complete auto complete in the Lenox world.

For whatever reason, I have to press tab twice to make this work.

So that's just what we got.

There s let me clear this out.

So get clear, and then that clears the screen.

Now, the next thing that I want to show you is what is s o.

You know, I just did that V and them and now you might be sitting there going What?

What?

It What What is the orb?

Them.

So you know, you guys talking about this?

Why would I use that?

So I simply type in what is space?

And then I do them.

I hit enter and so I can save M.

V.

Improved A programmer's text editor.

Oh, okay.

That's that's a program.

This text editor, huh?

I wonder what he is.

Then what is the ve improved?

A programmer's text editor.

Okay, so they're both programmers.

Text editor.

Okay, then that gives you a little bit of an idea of what's going on.

What is I f config again?

Just insists just in a sentence.

Configure a network interface.

What is l s lest directory contents.

And so this is a way, you know, if you hear commands or if you're looking at a big screen of commands and you're just simply trying to figure out what the hell it is that you're going to use, that's it.

Simply by using what is That's a way to be able to seek.

So with that, let's clear again.

Clear hit, enter and it clears everything out.

So now let's look at man pages.

So I was talking about, uh, less before, so we're gonna use a l s A lot.

Everybody uses that Les Allies is one of those things you're saying they're going.

I wonder what l s is.

So, man, So for man, Page space L s.

And now we get this is what it's called a man Paige.
