  • Turning to overseas, where Italy has been particularly hard hit, the pope gave an emotional message, inviting the world to rediscover the importance of small gestures at the time of crisis.

  • Here's a B C's Maggie Ruli.

  • Good morning.

  • Yeah, those numbers out of Italy are absolutely staggering.

  • The death toll there continues to rise, hundreds of people still dying every day.

  • And if this rate keeps up, Italy's death toll could surpass China's within a number of days.

  • But keep in mind the population of China is about 1.4 billion.

  • Italy.

  • It's just 60 million funeral homes and hospital there are completely overwhelmed.

  • Doctors and nurses say they're running out of needed supplies, things like life saving, ventilators and an emotional interview.

  • The pope is now asking everyone to think of those doctors and nurses, all of the medical personnel on the front lines of this fight fighting, sacrificing their lives for this virus.

  • He's also saying, we're not out of the woods yet, reminding everyone to take the lock down seriously.

  • Experts arresting eight, finding 8000 people in just the past week, reminding them that now is the time to act and telling their saying what's happening in their country should be a reminder of what could happen around the rest of the world.
