  • You may be wondering why I've gathered you here today...

  • We have American sushi!

  • Today we're going to try ~American sushi~ wooooo

  • Yeeeep

  • American sushi is a little different from Japanese sushi.

  • We mostly have giant rolls like these.

  • Is that so?

  • When we think of sushi, this is what we think of.

  • You don't eat nigiri sushi?

  • It's not as common.

  • This sushi is so... American.

  • This is-

  • I haven't seen this before. What is this?

  • Deep-fried.

  • This is deep-fried sushi. This is very American.

  • In Japan when you think of sushi, you typically think of nigiri sushi, right?

  • So just the rice with a layer of raw fish on top.

  • Edo-style sushi.

  • It's made and eaten quickly.

  • I think the difference between Japanese and American sushi is

  • Japanese sushi focuses on the flavor of the fish

  • and savoring the fish itself.

  • So getting the freshest, most delicious fish.

  • Whereas America focuses on finding really interesting combinations.

  • So we go for flavor combinations to make the sushi taste unique and interesting.

  • And I think they're almost too different to even compare to each other.

  • They're both so good in their own way.

  • We actually bought these a few hours ago and brought them home

  • so that we could film at our leisure here and not bother people at a restaurant.

  • So they may not look as beautiful as they did when we first got them.

  • It's a little old now, but it's all right.

  • I don't know if these all have names in different sushi restaurants,

  • but at the restaurant we went to, this one's called a Sunday Morning roll.

  • It has salmon and cream cheese inside of it.

  • And you deep fry the whole thing.

  • And the entire thing is deep fried. It's really good, I've had it before.

  • Deep fried sushi, yo. You gotta try it!

  • If you come to America, I recommend this!

  • All right~

  • Deep fried sushi!

  • So inside this is salmon and cream cheese and it's aaaall deep fried.

  • Cream cheese...?

  • YEAH.

  • Here I go.

  • It's like I'm eating tendon (tempura donburI).

  • Really?

  • Rice, tempura, seaweed... it's the same.

  • Yeah, it's just like eating tendon.

  • Isn't it good?

  • Yeah, it's good.

  • If you don't know what tendon is, I just made tendon on Jun's Kitchen

  • if you wanna see it, go ahead.

  • Tendon is deep fried STUFF on top of rice.

  • I'll do my best to fit this in my mouth but this is going to be gross.

  • I might have to censor this.

  • Do you want me to put my hand over you?

  • Yeah, censor me. Jun censor!

  • "You can't see this!"

  • Oishii! (Delicious!)

  • So this sushi right here is called a California roll.

  • It's imitation crab, avocado, and cucumber

  • wrapped in nori with rice on the outside and sesame seeds.

  • And this is probably the most famous American sushi.

  • All right, let's have a California roll to refresh our palette now.

  • So when I first started eating sushi, I had no idea what the rules for all this stuff was.

  • So I put wasabi and ginger (on it) and then I dipped it in soy sauce,

  • and I ate it like that.

  • And I know maybe it looks a little bit weird to Japanese people

  • but you know what, it's delicious!

  • And this is still the way I prefer to eat my California rolls.

  • It's your American sushi. Eat however you want!

  • Oishii!

  • That's really good, yo.

  • You should try some. You should try it my way.

  • Okay, yo.

  • Yo, try it my way yo.

  • Itadakimasu

  • That's pretty delicious.

  • Isn't it?!

  • Yeah, it is.

  • Nice!!

  • YEAH!

  • The avocado is good.

  • This is called the Red Devil.

  • It has tempura shrimp inside, avocado, and it's topped with crab

  • and tempura flakes.

  • And here, this is called the Bengal roll.

  • This also has tempura shrimp inside, spicy crab, avocado, cucumber

  • eel sauce, spicy mayonnaise, and sesame seeds.

  • Itadakimasu~

  • Mmm.

  • I like how spicy the sauce is.

  • It was good.

  • All right

  • I like the sauce.

  • I got a cup of water and I just drank this much already in one second.

  • American sushi definitely makes you thirsty.

  • Really? Because it's oily.

  • Oh, because it's oily?

  • Okay, now this last one.

  • It's really similar to the Bengal roll I just had.

  • Yeah, the ingredients are really similar.

  • Yeah, it's good.

  • I like the Bengal roll better because it's spicier.

  • But it's really similar.

  • Which one was your favorite?

  • Hmm... I guess Bengal sushi?

  • Hmm okay!

  • So what's Jun's opinion on American style giant makizushi?

  • It makes you thirsty because they're deep fried.

  • But it's good, just like all the rest of American food I guess.

  • Right.

  • It's pretty addictive, I'd say, but it makes you thirsty.

  • Is it something you would go out of your way to eat?

  • I think I will miss these sometimes.

  • I mean, when I go back to Japan I can eat all this fresh raw sushi

  • and you can get tempura sushi kind of, but

  • these are really different. Especially the sauce. That's very American.

  • So then, your final thoughts on American sushi?

  • Delicious!

  • How many times can you say umai

  • It was better than I thought it'd be.

  • If you come to America, please try American sushi!

  • I think it's really good.

  • Me too.

  • It's something everyone could enjoy.

  • Right.

  • Are we advertising American sushi now?

  • It's just really good. I just missed American sushi.

  • If you haven't had it, you should try it.

  • I really like this spicy mayonnaise.

  • Yeah, this spicy mayonnaise is really popular in America. It's kind of all over now.

  • If you go to a grocery store you can even buy it in bottles this big.

  • We still have so much sushi left.

  • Okay, we're going to end this and enjoy the rest of our sushi in peace.

  • And you guys, eat some sushi!

  • We have one minute. Quick, quick!

  • Okay okay

  • Why are you giving me the huge one, seriously?!

  • We're gonna be romantic and feed each other.

  • I can't eat that, it has the tail on it!

  • Just do it!

  • DO IT!

  • No no no.

  • COME ON!

  • No, it's not working.

  • It's not working.

  • FAIL!

  • Fail.

  • Ugh, that was a bad choice.

  • That didn't work out so well.

  • Okay, bye.

You may be wondering why I've gathered you here today...
