  • Good morning and welcome to Sunday supplements.

  • Liverpool have been beaten.

  • What would 13 nil against Jurgen Klopp side and we'll be discussing what impact that result on the manner of it may have on the rest of Liverpool season.

  • It's care about Cup final day, but what chance to massive underdogs?

  • Aston Villa stand against Manchester City?

  • One way Royal Madrid on Wednesday on ahead of a key game at Goodison Park, will discuss how Everton and Manchester United have evolved since evidence thumping win in that picture last season.

  • Plus, in part five today, Show will be asking.

  • Is there a regional bias in print football journalism?

  • Or is it a myth that all sports editor's support London teams No regional buyers in the studio today with London's finest John Cross?

  • He told us to infuse the football writer at The Mirror Daily Mail reporter in the Northwest, Dominic King on Midland's Going for the Telegraph.

  • John Percy making his debut today.

  • You are very I give you the big buildup overnight.

  • Don't forget, you can tweet the show at some days up on the vessel appear on screen over the next 90 minutes or so.

  • Well, I'll tell you the papers this morning in an absolute treat to read.

  • It is joyful, having an hour and 1/2 just to read the pages and small Children your ankles.

  • Well, the way I recommend you going out and buying one today because there's so much great content across all of the papers.

  • The male have club shock, as you might expect after the Trina Watford win, ending Liverpool's invincible run.

  • They haven't interviewed with new know as a couple of the papers have as well, really good insight there.

  • The Mirror Rashford could be fit for the euros and so near so sorr after Melissa almost completed a hatchet, which would have been four nil extraordinary in that game, Martin lips in here in the sun end of the line, all controversy about V.

  • A R.

  • And the forensic analysis of offsides, which has been winding people up quite a lot, looks a Zo I found gonna allow the Premier League to have a thicker line when it comes to a judging offside.

  • So that'll be interesting.

  • We'll talk about that at the top of Part three on DDE in the Sunday Times.

  • There is a great deal to bay getting your eyes around on that, of course, saw helping to be Liverpool after 422 days and 44 matches in the Premier League, Rashford fit for the Euros.

  • Andi in The Telegraph is a rather large page pullout on Beth England's going twice to and Chelsea, the first ever League Cup that was played in Nottingham Forest yesterday, and Jill Scott unfinished business before she retires.

  • That's ahead of she believes cut, which is a huge tournament for Phil Neville's England side.

  • Wow, we have got a lot to fit in, so I'm gonna stop talking about newspapers.

  • It's not talking to you, Don King, because you were at that match yesterday.

  • Vickery's road, which I'm sure you put a fiver on that result, didn't you?

  • But But where would you place the line between what?

  • For being absolutely outstanding and Liverpool being shocking on the day?

  • It's always harder in a story like this.

  • You know which way to go and I think it's very, very important to emphasize just how good Watford where yesterday you could see in the first half her well, Jill, beware how well set off the atmosphere was fantastic.

  • Stadium was alive all the way through on.

  • So they need to be given credit for a result that can possibly transformed their season.

  • See them get out of relegation trouble.

  • Nigel.

  • Patients from wonder, since he is being in given how part of situation they were in the beginning of the season.

  • Liverpool.

  • Just another horrendous day.

  • Probably the West they've had since they played Tottenham Wembley in October 2017.

  • No complaints about Jurgen Klopp.

  • Never had them any any quibbles.

  • They em, Virgil Van Dyke said it was unacceptable.

  • Andi just slipped so far below the standards that they said that what would run all over them after that initial up turned informant to Nigel Pierce, certain they've gotten several games without a win that came out the blue.

  • But you know Nigel Pearson pretty well from his time.

  • Unless today, what was he like?

  • That it was fantastic.

  • I mean, obviously, you had to get to know him from the the press conference he sees quite, he's in the zone, you know, he's like new, you know, It was, you know, just sometimes I just want to talk.

  • Football doesn't like questions.

  • What is put in the spot.

  • He's a terrific manager.

  • What he did it, Lester with the final great escape obviously gotten promote from Lee won all the way.

  • It was some wins out of nine in the final season.

  • Obviously been talking about that this week, doing that again with Watford.

  • I mean, him and Craig Shakespeare.

  • I mean, they're just a great little double out the detail really well, together on the training ground on just the way they bounce off each other.

  • So they're giving themselves a great chance, something he's just, you know, the results yesterday would just fascinating for the relegation fire, obviously knowledge on Friday, now as well, you say fascinating Aston Villa say absolutely horrific but will come in the next part.

  • But we shocked by what you saw, was really first half.

  • I did think it was.

  • It was a bit of a stalemate, really wasn't much of a game, was it?

  • But But the difference I think that you see in Watford is that with Nigel Pearson, I mean, they've been set loose and managers this season shouldn't forget that I'm not massively in favor of what a revolving door policy on manages I think that strikes me as it is, a club that's not that will run.

  • You can't argue otherwise, but they just stay in the Premier League on as soon as they got Nigel Pierce and I thought, Well, here's one that's that's inspirational is a good managerial appointment because they're well drilled that will put together, aren't they?

  • And I just felt that having seen livable quite a lot recently, I just felt they weren't quite firing.

  • They weren't quite a the top of their game, and they're always vulnerable.

  • And it was interesting to hear clock talk afterwards about having the team being under some sort of burden, because everyone talks about these records beating my own cities, you know, record of 18 consecutive, wouldn't set a couple of years ago.

  • Catching Arsenals.

  • Invent you know, Invincibles record of 49 games unbeaten go in the season unbeaten talk to win the title.

  • I just think those sort of things do weigh on players minds that you can talk all day about it and deny it on.

  • Players probably say the same thing.

  • You know, Liverpool is a fantastic place to be, you know, sort of.

  • Millwood is absolutely buzzing.

  • The players are really sort of kind of happy there.

  • It's an amazing place, but I just think that that burden of history just seems to have weighed on them.

  • They're the best team by 1,000,000 miles in the country.

  • They're absolutely fabulous to watch, but it just feels like they've.

  • They've had their little dip in the last few weeks.

  • That coupled with the winter break, you know the sort of the controversy around that.

  • And I just think they came to Watford yesterday and met up against a really good well drill.

  • What for team on DDE.

  • That was the obstacle a little bit too far.

  • But I just think Liverpool, you know, we'll look back and it's a shame.

  • That's what kind of contract, more history.

  • But they will quit history of sorts because they'll beat the points tally.

  • I'm sure they'll set records left, right and centre.

  • This team is such a great team, but it almost feels like in with this defeat they'll hit the reset button go again on basically hit those heights again.

  • There's nothing to worry about.

  • I think they could easily win on Tuesday night.

  • I still think they'll turn around that that political Madrid game, they win it that win the title by an absolute country Mart.

  • Probably.

  • I think that we're sense of relief as well.

  • I think, you know, obviously they wanted to extend the record, but, you know, we're not.

  • I'm asking about that anymore.

  • You know, they've lost this game.

  • They could just get on with it.

  • Now in the league, they've lost the game.

  • You look in the league table, it's 22 points.

  • Okay, let's just put it into perspective.

  • There's no whiff of a title race here.

  • Is that unless it's gonna be the most spectacular collapse ever?

  • But I think privately there'll be some sort of relief when it's we've lost a game, Don't you asked about it again.

  • We could just keep going.

  • Now just get the job done.

  • Johnson.

  • It's a shame they won't have the Invincible stack.

  • Not if you're an Arsenal.

  • They are they all over social media last night.

  • Where do we build the statue outside the Emirates Jewish Melissa Rather chuffed about so they should enjoy it as well.

  • But I mean, John mentioned there dawn, the winter break and the fact they haven't been at their intense best since then.

  • Do you think it's because off the impact of the break, for whatever reason, maybe they mentally got to reset?

  • Do you think the news doing Jordan Henderson being out what they lack from his drive in his intensity in midfield and calls injuries of the back ups?

  • Absolutely well, Joe Gomez, miss yesterday is only a little tight hamstring.

  • It's not.

  • Nothing too seriously should be back within the week.

  • They missed the captain 100% yesterday.

  • He's being he's being the player of the season for Liverpool.

  • No others get the headlines like seller Marnie for me.

  • No one day people talk about the full works.

  • The person who's been driving forward over the last 23 months has Bean, Jordan Anderson.

  • I think he could win PF a player of the year.

  • He's being that good.

  • They missed him.

  • There was a huge void yesterday without him in terms of how they've bean since since the winter break.

  • They've definitely bean a beat or two slower nor actually sort of manage the game like almost shadowboxing and they had a little bit too much.

  • Wiley enlisted Thio get the better knowledge.

  • They were scruffy against West Ham.

  • Impossible.

  • I never really felt it.

  • We're gonna lose that game.

  • But then yesterday you could.

  • The tone was set early on.

  • Trans Trans, Alexander Arnold tried to play ball, pull it straight out to play as well as and clipped it out.

  • And it was just those little bits of detailed stuns that they've set.

  • They went there for a CZ.

  • The lads have said it.

  • It's it's nothing, nothing fatal.

  • And that's why I think it was.

  • It was important, too.

  • Emphasized just how well Wofford did.

  • They took advantage of that.

  • Davis was much about them winning yesterday's It was lovable.

  • Loser.

  • Yeah, And what food?

  • So up for it with physical battle as well, which it looked as I lived well, perhaps, weren't quite up for an early clattering of Trent.

  • Alexander.

  • Arnold was that maybe in his head and game absolutely set for Troy Deeney, wasn't it?

  • We love that game.

  • Didn't lover and Van Dark mean they would have faced many games like that?

  • I mean, this is old throwback, isn't it?

  • Nigel loves the strikers to be imposing and physical.

  • That's a sort of game that was tailor made for him wasn't it was just fantastic to watch.

  • Just really old school game.

  • I felt I felt sorry for this weekend.

  • Was the Norwich get big results Friday on exactly everyone else wins this weekend is almost negated.

  • I mean, I was just trying to make the point the other night on Twitter.

  • Basic.

  • Just so I know it, I think I can remember absolutely.

  • They are the best, really, you know, don't take this the wrong way, but they are the best bottom of the table team.

  • They must be found in the family is crazy.

  • I mean, they they play really good football.

  • They're attracted to what they've got.

  • Good players, terrific fullbacks.

  • And Godfrey, I think, is a good center back.

  • Cantwell's obviously making a name for himself on dear.

  • Absolutely great night, dear.

  • Wasn't so.

  • You kind of feel for them a bit, but I just think that it's a hell of a race down the bottom so that it almost feels like the Premier League tight races has become a turnoff.

  • Really, because Liverpool was so good, they're embarrassing everyone else.

  • And by the way, I think you know my vote 100% goes to Henderson Bent being took on the streets ahead as a leader and as a player.

  • Fabulous, you know, play the year and they've embarrassed everyone else.

  • But it feels like the race now for top four or top five.

  • It could be, couldn't it?

  • Basically, for the Champions League places and the relegation scrap is the most exciting race of all.

  • That's that's a massive.

  • That's no way detrimental.

  • Tillable causes massive tribute to Liverpool just of how good they have Bean.

  • I mean, you know, you mentioned the Invincibles.

  • It shows the sheer genius of great teams of the past toe win.

  • The title unbeaten is an amazing achievement, you know.

  • And that's obviously why are, you know, awesome fans taking so much pride on that.

  • You know, something that deserves so much credit on that, And but this'll live reporting for me.

  • I mean, football evolves.

  • And, you know, at the moment I thought two years ago, Man City, no one will ever reach those heights again.

  • Guardia.

  • Other set new barrette.

  • Barry's new parallels really means the absolute genius for me go audio in the way that the Gottman seats to play and then Liverpool this season of surpassed it Absolutely astonished.

  • It's like PlayStation.

  • Football is crazy.

  • The results.

  • It's like the kids are playing And when, When?

  • When?

  • When, you know it's just not being scene between fair.

  • It's like when you when you see that was like sequences of W's, it's It's almost like on the PlayStation that the kid's chair not results like that.

  • It's just being remarkable.

  • And that's why this is such a shock that it comes in.

  • And it is incredible special when you think how many variables during football matches could mean that my father better team on the day doesn't always win on draw again.

  • Yet they've managed to until now, when every single game, ball one they have seen the look on occasions that way have a game.

  • Last year, Villa will one nil up with 87 88.

  • Liverpool just kept going, was relentless, relentless and they just got the 1 to 1 Marnie score.

  • Didn't even Robertson.

  • Yes, it was just incredible just to watch this force of nature, this red machine, just power towards victory and villages had no answer.

  • That's that is one of the things people talk about the quality of the football, the flight.

  • It's the the sort of mentality, that refusal to to even contemplate that they gonna lose all stems back to an alley beat Barcelona last year.

  • In fact, it probably even goes fair that when they put that in the sequence of winds together to put the pressure on Manchester City in the race for the title, what we've done over the last year has Bean remarkable.

  • It was like 100 109 points of the homes in 11.

  • And how terrible parents effectively, I have to say it does embarrass the rest of the league, doesn't banister or does it?

  • This you just have to put pulled the hands of some time and say goodbye.

  • Watching genius?

  • Yeah, I think there's a bit about.

  • We are watching the best team.

  • I think it's sort of the Premier Li give it because every team you know that's a football revolves and they're taken into a whole new level.

  • But I do think as well as you know, it's not a criticism of live point anyway.

  • But brilliant as they have Bean for other teams, not not have responded.

  • I've been disappointed in cities title defense.

  • I mean, last season was a thrilling primarily simply because that Toto, we've never seen anything like it on now.

  • That was incredible.

  • In any other year, Liverpool win it by an absolute street.

  • Then I found that was still the best buy country.

  • Yeah, absolutely.

  • Liverpool way ahead.

  • But Man City, I mean, lest of felt a bit twice in their short of the Miami in a few additions, Maybe you could get closer, but those two streets ahead of everyone else, something we talked about Man City in Part two.

  • But just on Liverpool from minute mean the mental strength that they've had to get to this stage of the season to march, for goodness sake, having only drop points once before.

  • Now there's that slightly slightly there and doing yesterday in terms of possibly be mentally at that level every single week in the Premier League, they are human beings.

  • Yeah, I think there's also that sort of loneliness of being in front where you haven't got the pressure of somebody applying and snapping away heels to try and force a mistake out of your being in front for so long that perhaps, is we just lost a little bit of a bit of concentration.

  • What they've done is the speed, you know, we've said it before, but it has just been remarkable.

  • They almost get done.

  • We found faint praise.

  • I think almost gets boring.

  • And it's like, How can such a Roomba considered?

  • You always forget about it.

  • I'll live pulled a one again, but to have that many that much, you know that many point to the stage.

  • The scene is incredible.

  • You make sure the season doesn't peter out now because if they do go out the F A Cup Chelsea and then you know the one who don't against Atletico Madrid, they could have a couple of months with nothing riding on those fixtures of the victory tour of trophy parade around the country.

  • Wouldn't you know?

  • It might sound strange to see because it could be on C climactic.

  • If you got the the season the title wrapped up by the first week of April, you almost wonder whether they need a second trophy to really show the dominance of the in the domestic season on DDE.

  • You know, that's why I think the the F a Cup game on Tuesday nights.

  • So important, and I think they'll really do.

  • It will be something on it, and I think think their nights like that.

  • That kind of the cop really does becoming sort that mythical force, really, when it does kind of suck the bowline knot, no doubt about it.

  • I don't think that let's get really well drilled, great defensive.

  • But I still think the pool.

  • Let's just finish our Watford because we have to get them even more.

  • But I know everybody is.

  • But the fact that lost Gerald L.

  • Fe early on fascinating sing sorrows well, Summer signing as a 21 year old as he was then from Ren Sabri Lamouchi, the forest manager was his boss and he was really playing.

  • 17 minutes of Premier League football is given by Happy Gracia, and apparently that was his undoing.

  • That's why this acting's they weren't playing the £30 million signing.

  • How good you are unique a bit.

  • He looks a real prospect, doesn't mean there's been a lot talk around it for years.

  • I think we did into with him Jason Byrne, an interview with him.

  • I think that what food wanted him to play before before into before his interview because he wanted into show what he could do.

  • Obviously, last night, where's he been?

  • Used to be a tremendous, you know, They're a really good, well drill team.

  • What for?

  • I mean, I like the bat for the way they play at the back like that.

  • I like to call Ray.

  • You know, I think he's a great player.

  • We've got some good players now.

  • Now they're at the bottom.

  • Kapu, obviously there at the bottom three.

  • And that, like you said yesterday for Villa in Brighton.

  • Bad for everyone.

  • I was fantastic.

  • I just love staring at the relegation places as usual.

  • It's wonderful to watch is that it's so close when you're just up.

  • Know exactly what?

  • We're just out the bottom four on goal difference.

  • Balmer Just in it after the tool drawer gets chills in them.

  • Villa two points off it.

  • No, it's have a fighting chance.

  • Six points or safety is gonna be fun, isn't it?

  • Now, coming back in part two, we'll be discussing the Cara about Cup final on whether Aston Villa can pull off a shock against Manchester City.

  • Joins in second Welcome to part two off Sunday supplement.

  • Now we're gonna talk Aston Villa in Manchester City now bag of mind.

  • It's the care about Cup final later on today at Wembley.

  • David Walsh in the Sunday Times Today talks about Man City's fabulous win at Rail Madrid in the week which John was at.

  • This Realmadrid team may be ordinary, but there should be no doubt the Pep Guardiola delivered a managerial master class last Wednesday night and then includes quotes in there, in which Pep says no, it wasn't a managerial bus class.

  • It'll I didn't really do anything as in Don't give me credit when we weren't as in when we lose very fine margins either way, what sweet of him to play it out when he could have taken a ll the glory Couldn't you were there, too?

  • Yeah, it was magnanimous really about it afterwards, simply because it's fine margins, isn't it, really?

  • I mean, I still don't know.

  • We said we sat there trying to work out in the first off.

  • What is this formation?

  • And I still don't quite work it out because you had Gabrielle.

  • He's just on the left.

  • A times playing left back, you had Bernardo Silver's as a Force nine.

  • You had Kevin Deb Roy, who was superb throughout but then linking up was almost an auxiliary forward.

  • And then you had Aguero, the top scorer on the bench, was left on the bench and sterling as well, who was fit to start, wanted to start, basically just came on with it.

  • Sort of kind of very important.

  • I should add cameo role at the end and frankly, once you go behind.

  • And it was a comedy of errors robbery, you know, sloppy and possession and Kabul could should have cleared it.

  • And then based around Madrid, the devil's rightly points out such an average team.

  • They want it 13 times.

  • But this is so far removed from being a classic around Madrid team that you feel this team is there for the taking have gone one nil behind immensity if they, you know if they mess this up.

  • Bearing in mind all the anger and frustration around the European ban, you have the man city fans in the top corner, the ground singing their hearts out the magnificent throughout, but singing largely a lot of songs about you a friend about the Champions League ban on Dhe.

  • Frankly think, Well, that they've blown this.

  • What an opportunity.

  • And yet the way that they came back, the catalyst was Sterling.

  • Coming on with his extra injection of pace wins the penalty.

  • I mean, it was it was fantastic.

  • They were patient, there were well drilled, they were organized.

  • But you also have to say they were kind of quite close to that defeat, which would have been unfair because Man city on the night with a much better team.

  • They even went behind when they were dominating the game.

  • And Guardiola was talking about kind of a worthy.

  • The lengthy preparation went into to the tactical set up on Got it?

  • Absolutely spot on.

  • You feel that?

  • You know, I mean, Ramos, I mean, is a comedy pantomime villain is Nick pulls back Gabrielle Jesus, who probably would have scored on if it had been 31 Then it's game over.

  • I still think that the man city will still be strong enough.

  • But you feel that in a mixed this anger and frustration about the European ban, it is written in the stars.

  • For me, that man city will go to the Champions League final and win it, because that's what happens in football.

  • Everything that you can't possibly imagine.

  • You know that That would be the great star, really always guaranteed from this point.

  • They're good enough to do it.

  • Why would say, Is that basically defensively the port coming off injured again?

  • Does that raise the issue that is really struggling?

  • Like, I guess it does that extravagant come back from that knee injury on the knock on effect of a hamstring Now?

  • I mean, if they can overcome that, settle the back for this team can easily be European champions.

  • They're that good that they've got a manager, I think bristles with frustration in that basically, even impress companies on the on the Tuesday night was asking questions.

  • Why is your record so poor in the championship twice in Barcelona way?

  • Well, I know that you're crazy.

  • I mean, he's so you know, is a genius is one of the best managers ever in the Premier League Man city.

  • I think of one of the best things we've ever seen in the Premier League and probably ever will on.

  • Of course, they can go and win it now.

  • And I just thought that that night with a ll the with the city fans with the city come back with the city determination with Guardia.

  • You know, every minute detail shows you just how good city are and shows you why City can indeed win the European Cup of ships.

  • And do you get that vibe from having dealt with them that they are driven on that little bit more by this?

  • Yeah, absolutely.

  • I mean, he denies it.

  • Andi.

  • Everyone says no.

  • That's that's just not true.

  • Of course they are.

  • They're angry that better about it.

  • I must say, I think financial fair play is wrong, but once you introduce the rules, everyone has to buy.

  • But I don't like it.

  • It will always serve up reasons why and you know excuses and wait around it.

  • And I think that's that's wrong for football.

  • And I think that's a shame.

  • So I don't actually agree with their 50 because man city have been great for Emily as guilty before them.

  • Absolutely fantastic.

  • But I just think that serves up the rights and wrongs we could argue all day about it.

  • The rules are in place.

  • If they've broken them, they'll get punished.

  • So but basically that has been such a motivation, such a driving force, and I think that will take them to you as a sailor.

  • Do you think they've got a great chance to go all the way?

  • And I think, you know, in their heart of hearts, they will be thinking We've got to go out and show him because what bigger embarrassment for you, eh?

  • For could be the man city banned for two years ago when the European Cup be amazing.

  • Do you get the sense that there is so much focus on whether Pep and Man City can finally win the Champions League?

  • But perhaps his other achievements?

  • And there are other achievements of winning so many trophies.

  • The trouble?

  • Our season's been slightly overshadowed.

  • Yeah, what you did last season, I can't believe how little I'm courage.

  • The echo at the time, that always always feels like there's something angry about months City.

  • I don't know whether the funds and really properly enjoy what what what they've got.

  • The minute it was almost the F A Cup final was like sort of really strange reaction afterwards, but what they did last season was amazed.

  • Never been done in English football when in all three, if they if they win today, is that six of the last eight domestic trophies?

  • This is This is one of the greatest teams of all time seeing football from that they've never seen before.

  • Our elected The Manchester Evening News.

  • Well, I started off on in my career on the the team from 1968 to nearly 70.

  • They were the gods that the European copans couple of the one on the league on the last day of the season with Belle and Summerbee and Franny Lee and Neil Young and all those on they were they were held is like the beacon of whatever this this, this team over the last 56 years, they're different stratosphere that we can talk about them like a C Milan or Real Madrid in terms of what it don't domestically.

  • And if they just if they got behind, it really got behind the funds for the Champions League, they could they could win.

  • I think you can't even there, and you hope that what they did the Madrid, because there's only three English teams now one in the band about you hope that that sort of ignites a love affair with what European football's about.

  • Because there is not nothing better than the men in Europe on the good enough to win.

  • They were fabulous the other night.

  • They are overwhelming favorites to be village today.

  • I was astonished when I saw this bookies olds this morning.

  • The old zone villa winning this match one nil are the same as Manchester City.

  • Winning it seven mil, both 50 to 1.

  • That's extraordinary, absolutely extraordinary.

  • What's your take on that job?

  • Well, it's a massive asking.

  • And I mean, that went on in midweek was without Aguero on stirring until he came on.

  • So I would assume they'd start today.

  • They've obviously wanted two times, and I think it is.

  • I mean, last year with it, the capper incident and everything.

  • Then there have gotta work it out and they said it's a huge, huge, daunting task for them.

  • But, I mean, we've seen yesterday in the Premier Li.

  • These upsets can happen.

  • Whether it can happen today.

  • We'll have to say I mean, I just think they're gonna be too strong with my Midland's have firmly on my bold head.

  • I would obviously little village to win, but I just can't see it.

  • But I just think it will be too strong on Obviously Villa.

  • The thing All Caesar's been the goals.

  • If they can, they score more than one or two.

  • Can't see City not scoring one or two.

  • Brilliant conceding goals on 52.

  • That's incredible.

  • I mean, you go down with that when you're 52.

  • That's something Dean Smith.

  • Really, they've lost three in a row.

  • Balmer, Spurs and really the one at Southampton was a shocker.

  • Wasn't in terms of the nature of the defeat.

  • The performers that they were literally no positives for the manager to come up with after it.

  • And he actually accused the Downing tools and not fancy it.

  • Not showing up for the fight, he said that they played the way off.

  • If you played the out playing today as well, which is Dean Smith doesn't do that.

  • I think he's done it probably twice.

  • A lot of the players speak about what he did last season.

  • It's stoke away.

  • I think it was where at halftime that were either losing or they were playing Pauline.

  • He got the hair dryer out.

  • They never look back from that.

  • He did it on on Saturday in South Hampton, obviously hoping for a similar reaction.

  • But that's very rare for himto go for them like that.

  • So if it gets a reaction, it will work well.

  • If he's gonna drop below, the place might be John Terry sent half.

  • That's interesting, but imagine Liverpool skulls for us, that'd be great.

  • I mean, this is your piece today in The Sunday Telegraph.

  • Very nice picture of Dean Smith.

  • Look, my framing.

  • That was a long time ago that stole your way.

  • Look cracking that you've not got your middle and sat on Smith's ambition, driven by family values as he aims to resurrect Resurrect Phyllis Glory days now well known that he's a villa fat, sad background to this.

  • The dad, Ron is suffering badly from dementia and doesn't even recognize his son's Dave on Dean.

  • And he wants.

  • He wants to take the train back and show him that, barely able to open his eyes even in home for four years now, I think obviously dementia is a horrible illness.

  • He's think he's in advanced stages, obviously didn't go see him a lot, and I think like he said in the piece there, I think he saw him before the playoff, finally went home and had a glint in his eye.

  • Didn't still didn't know who he waas.

  • That he was Villa manager, obviously.

  • But there was that glint and he just had that moment.

  • We thought it might be coming back.

  • I think it's got worse.

  • His eyes obviously on open now, no idea is Villa manager, which Dean fun since the age of 456 Whatever it was, you know, obviously want your parents to know that you've got the dream job.

  • He doesn't even know.

  • He's not even aware of it.

  • But obviously, Brother Dave's why was really funny story there about He was down at Southampton last week.

  • He would have heard all that Dean champ Susie Whitey picking him.

  • Why's he doing that?

  • I would have heard all this from the funds, so it's a real family sort of affair with.

  • The competition is really will be there Today is where expect, and Dean was saying he'd have been there if he wasn't manager.

  • I mean, that's how tie his relation with its been a previous Cup finals before, hasn't it apart from in 96 when he's playing for Hereford and they lost the day before ingrained turn of the managers that they have to come back in the next day was devastated.

  • What your thoughts on on Dean Smith position at Villa?

  • It would be a massive upset today, but we've seen those before and cup finals.

  • It would be I did an interview for yesterday for a CZ reconstituted The Villas under half a really good season in amongst the kind of the highs and lows and that the buzzword, Really, the whole piece was about revenge, and I guess they're having lost that the editor had.

  • And then basically, in between the two Lester semifinals that they're beaten 61 by my own city.

  • I mean, that's their driving force.

  • And you just think, How on earth can you go from two brilliant semi final performances against Lester into into that kind of cap capitulation against Matt City?

  • Because as good as Man City, a villa with Paul and I think they're being times haven't I mean even, you know, concert was talking about this basically where they had really devastating defeats, where it probably has left question marks over the manager.

  • I think they kind of so real players get together after the what for defeat Victory's road just after questioning.

  • And I mean from the outside looking in, I think Dean Smith, doing an amazing job is taken them up, which is not a given.

  • I know there's kind of Spencer money, but it's not that easy.

  • It's really know and he's got into a Wembley Cup final and yet it still seems to me that is a bit of doubt floating around about some kind of Dean Smith, you know, is he the right man?

  • I just think of course he is.

  • You know if there's a connection there with the fans, but I'm not totally convinced it'll.

  • The fans kind of Wood would appreciate that in a mixed defeats.

  • But I just think that what he's got to get today is a reaction to that lamentable Southampton performance because that's the point, isn't it?

  • And I think up until this point he's always got a reaction and I think that's the key, so you get a reaction from a really bad day at the office and take that forward, get a better performance.

  • That's what he's got.

  • Everyone makes man City favorites.

  • Of course they do.

  • But what?

  • The key for Villa here is doing themselves credit getting getting a performance to be proud off because people talk about them doing a Fulham Don't megastar season for them.

  • Spend huge amounts of money not necessarily on the right place for the job in hand.

  • Village, about £127 million last summer, but it's slightly different, wasn't it?

  • They didn't have money Plays.

  • Was 1111 plays out on the books after the playoff final.

  • They hate this.

  • Doing a full on thing.

  • If you managed, it doesn't go down very well.

  • So they scouted all their players from Seoul October.

  • The year You know this is the plan is a Plan B promotional championship.

  • So it was a cohesive strategy on what they were doing and science not all of them worked out.

  • You know, that's undeniable.

  • You know, there's something I've been really good.

  • Some have been average from have been awful, but that, I suppose, is when you spend that money, there's always that risk isn't but they had to build a new team.

  • So it wasn't doing a full on despite, you know, well, the sort of comparisons, obviously, when the platform that spending loads of money there's was planned, But obviously there's there's, there's risks and gambles with every song you make isn't just briefly.

  • Don't forget to break what it's all about Jack Grealish, because I mean the talent that he is astonishing it.

  • Danny Murphy in the mail on Sunday, today talking about him.

  • And there seems to be this vibe that he will go regardless of whether Villa stay up.

  • Do you know much?

  • United City interests?

  • Interest United Bean Looking a long time on the old way through January.

  • He was there was that link.

  • I was 19 year old.

  • I think it was a real Ferdinand story in meeting referred on when he was 16.

  • This before it even made a first appearance.

  • So there's always been interested in a no, and you say he's a he's a he's a terrific player on.

  • I think there's a it's been mentioned with a lot of clubs on Remember him.

  • You have a Cup semi final four years ago, five years ago.

  • Now, yeah, leading Liverpool a merry dance on DDE.

  • You know, he certainly won't be bound by the occasion.

  • Think if if you're really going to do something, it's just imperative that he shines.

  • I don't think you'll go.

  • You put me on the spot here.

  • I mean, I think obviously there's a leaving village will be a huge rent from If they go down, it's a fatal complained.

  • There's no argument there is whether he wants to go to that next level at this stage of his career because obviously he's a fantastic player.

  • Does he want to be hanging around this part of the table?

  • I mean, obviously, Villa could sign three players, and some of that transform them.

  • If they stay up, you know that could be worth staying.

  • But I just think I'm sorry to vilify.

  • The name befits review on Monday night.

  • Chairman Al Manager.

  • You build a team around if you want to.

  • Just the team start again.

  • You get Jack Grealish, build your team around him.

  • There's no better way to spark it.

  • Up with him is a no group of people.

  • You got to be in England, called up and For me, the way is playing the starts to us.

  • Fascinating, great talent.

  • He has to see what it can do is offer you look enough, you'll be coming up in part three.

  • We'll be looking at the evolution of evidence on Manchester United, had a big game Goodison Park and discussing what new know has revealed in the papers this morning.

  • Welcome back to Sunday supplements we have in the studio.

  • John Cross has been here a few times before.

  • So, too, has Don King and making his debut today or Villa Man give you such a big buildup.

  • John Percy is great to have you with us.

  • We'll be talking more about Midland's football in due course, but looking at some of the pages today, quite clearly dominated by that.

  • Wonderful.

  • If you're what Federal arsenal for its renewal victory over livable Rashford fit for the Euros.

  • What else would you like to say?

  • A bit more on that new No on the Fame game will come and talk that new know in a few moments and what he's doing and what he has revealed on dhe there waas something in the Telegraph.

  • There's so many newspapers here anyway, let me show you Graeme Souness as well.

  • In the Sunday Times, talking about Angelotti could leave lead evident to a surprise tilt.

  • A Champions League qualification on DAT Player in The Telegraph, who dislocated a kneecap and then bashed it back in several times.

  • Luke Edwards has done a big piece on that.

  • I did that once.

  • Bashed it back in.

  • Never played again.

  • We thought it was terrible.

  • I did.

  • Anyway, that's why you stuck with me.

  • So let's talk about V A r.

  • Because because there's been an eye fab meeting in Belfast yesterday on DDE, basically Pierluigi Collina, who is the chair of Fevers Referees Committee, he was asked whether the probably could use thicker lines in judging offsides.

  • Nothing to prevent this from happening, John.

  • Is that a good idea?

  • Will that solve all this forensic analysis debate?

  • To a degree, I just think it's shifting the goalpost somewhat.

  • I mean, I'm up for anything that frankly changes and improves our use of a R, because what has driven me to frustration, distraction on a huge advocate of the hour we have to.

  • We can't run away from it.

  • We have to introduce it is there and it should be used well.

  • Is the English Premier League arrogance in that We think we are so much better than everyone else that we can do it in a different way and cleaner and Ellery both So cutting.

  • I think in some of the remarks that they sort of said about the way that we don't use pitchside monitors.

  • I mean, it is laughably bad about failure to use pitchside monitors.

  • And also, I don't think we ever get over the fact that is welling quite nice and smoothly, thank you very much in the Champions League and even now in the Europa League as well.

  • But the key thing for me is that it doesn't seem to take so much time went when it's in the Champions League and are we imagining that?

  • Probably partly yes.

  • But the key reason for me is that the fans in the stadium, when they can see on the contentious decision, the referee going over to the pit side monitor, they can actually see what's going on.

  • They really long as the decision is up for grabs.

  • It's all about the fans in the stadium because that that feeds the whole atmosphere when you can celebrate, if you can celebrate.

  • And I just think it's it's ludicrous the way that we've introduced in the arrogance that we have.

  • It stems, really, I think, from a poor leadership from Mike Riley, who I mean, you know, I'm Jackie went as well.

  • But there was some briefing done.

  • Wasn't a Premier League which was incredibly useful as a journalist to go and feed, often learn from in which we were basically told that the referees are told, are encouraged not to go and consult the monitors to rely on trust in the veil?

  • And then, what?

  • 67 weeks later, after one of the Premier League stakeholders meeting.

  • So which I always go to on a monthly basis.

  • You got Mike Riley standing outside.

  • The longer the hotel, which they stood and said No, of course we don't, you know, tell them not to go and check the monitors.

  • Well, actually, you do.

  • And with leadership like that, how on earth are you going to make V A R work?

  • But what fascinates me is that I was talking to someone at a club last weekend under sort of, you know, how it goes.

  • T The Premier League meetings I saw said about my only then and they they're no on a witch hunt to get out.

  • Mike Riley.

  • They just want a better They are that sooner or later we just got to accept that mullet.

  • Riley's had a stinker with this on, basically in football, which we didn't look for his gait girl, who we do look for someone if they know they haven't done it very well, might.

  • Riley hasn't introduced it very well, so it bring someone else in.

  • Our Web has done it fantastically well.

  • In the MLS.

  • It runs like a dream.

  • I've been over there, seen it seen out Web, get him over getting back.

  • You know, basically, we've let far too many good referees go on.

  • The stand of referee is Paul so poor that we've got poor referees being the V A.

  • R.

  • And you know, people say over the veil should be the one, so it fits all solution.

  • Well, it's not that because you've got a poor standard of referee being the V r.

  • On occasion, it's so it's so wrong.

  • It's so poor, and I just hope that this weekend on the artifact comments coming out well in some ways, shame the Premier League into proving it, improving it.

  • Another quote from David Valerie, the I found technical director.

  • He acknowledged that they are is taken away, the benefit of the doubt from the attacking team, saying We didn't envisage this would happen.

  • Well, they have to do something about it.

  • They're trying to do something about it.

  • Do you see it is a leadership issue, or deceit is a communication.

  • Actually, perhaps I'm just confused by the whole thing.

  • It's ruined the season.

  • It's absolutely doing this season.

  • I was led to believe that Vial was introduced to make play more exciting to bring more goals into the game.

  • On dhe, these lines, like grafts on on exercise, book on the little tiny You're penalizing toes.

  • And that's not far is I thought it was food for clear and obvious mistakes.

  • No linesman, no linesman could could spot someone's Toby and offside.

  • Nobody would ever even even questioned it before.

  • I mean, we could probably sit in on devote this whole section.

  • Too bad calls that you see, because way won't you know what I mean?

  • But it's it's cast a shadow over the season.

  • It's a joy killer.

  • You've hod situations where funds don't even know whether they can celebrate.

  • That's what I think, the whole essence of what you go to football for.

  • That spontaneous minute, the joy, the release.

  • It's not there anymore, because everybody's looking on thinking.

  • Is it okay?

  • Is that okay?

  • I'm gonna check on that.

  • That's on me.

  • I think is the biggest indictments.

  • And I don't like the fact that we've Bean had e mails pumped out to us from the Premier League, Onda Pgmol saying Everything's were confined.

  • It isn't They need to have the need to come and face serious questions on discourse, where it's where it's gone wrong.

  • Gloom is only the first season that John is it and something else they're looking to change is the concussion substitute.

  • They're gonna trial that in the Tokyo Olympics, as long as that does go ahead and that is how long it would take.

  • Delays, more delays.

  • I could just say I can see the logic in it would be fewer delays because they'd get them off the pitch while the concussion sub song.

  • I just seen them so long still delay the game.

  • Obviously, I know it's the protocol.

  • You know, the concussion, you know they have to be followed.

  • But I just think it's just gonna delay the game even more.

  • The moment it's like Dom says.

  • And John, it's just stop.

  • Start all the time and, you know, I have noticed in the last few months.

  • Now fans are looking at screens.

  • Their players are doing it A few months ago, thinking of re scored.

  • Now the funds live in it, and that's that's when is going, you know, you really losing it.

  • We leave in a grip on the game.

  • We've got to sort out Okay, well, let's move on to Everton on Matched United, which is being played today or yesterday.

  • If you're listening on the treadmill tomorrow morning on the podcast, there's a lot of people tell me they do.

  • But for Neil, absolutely thumping for Laguna socialize United last season at Goodison Park, one of those where only said there was zero positives at the end of it.

  • But just explain Everton perspective, which is one of your clubs that you cover on how things have changed under Carlo Ancelotti did a great piece on it and what he's lost.

  • So and that you talk about, I felt then the evidence could be credibl
