Chorkies are without a doubt one of the cutest designer dog breeds available to the modern
-
dog fancier.
-
A relatively new breed created in the early 1990s, a Chorkie is the result of acrossing
-
a Yorkshire Terrier and a Chihuahua.
-
Sometimes refered to as a Chia-Yorkie, Yorkie-Chi, or Yorkiehuahua, he is a high-energy dog between
-
8 -10 pounds with a confidence and self-assuredness of a dog ten times his size.
-
Hi, welcome to Animal Facts.

-
The Chorkie tends to be loyal, loving and intelligent.
-
This is a very playful dog that enjoys human companionship.
-
Chorkies love an abundance of attention and affection and are happiest cuddling in your
-
lap.
-
In fact, they love attention so much that they often prefer sitting on their owner's
-
lap over playing with other dogs or entertaining themselves with toys.
-
9.
-
They do get along well with other dogs and animals, provided they are of about the same
-
size.
-
This breed can be somewhat fearless and may even have a tendency to challenge larger animals.
-
While this breed may get along well with children, they are a small breed that could be easily
-
injured by an overly energetic child.
-
In addition, their fearlessness can cause injuries when they jump heedlessly off furniture
-
or other high locations.
-
8.
-
The Chorkie does well in practically any environment, including homes, farms and apartments.
-
He is an active breed, but it will do well with walking on a regular basis.
-
Even providing a long hallway for this breed to exercise in is sufficient.
-
This breed tends to experience bursts of energy and then will be ready to settle in for a
-
nap, ofcourse in your lap.

-
The popularity of this cute much loved dog surged during the 90s when the phenomenon
-
of small dogs, especially Chihuahuas took off.
-
In the late 80’s and 90’s breeders took to breeding “designer dogs” purposely
-
mixing well-known purebreds to create new hybrids for dog lovers wishing for a distinctive
-
companion.
-
Today, Chorkies are popular toy dogs and a favorite ‘purse’ dog despite their scruffy
-
Yorkie appearance.
-
6.
-
Depending on its parents the Chorkie can be different sizes.
-
It can be a tall leggy dog or it could have shorter legs like the Yorkshire terrier.
-
They have a distinct fluffy coat and obvious, lighter colored eyebrows.
-
These teacup dogs come in a variety of colors and can be red, gray, brown or black with
-
some even changing their color with each season.
-
5.
-
If cared for properly the Chorkie can enjoy a long life and the average life expectancy
-
is 15 years.
-
The Chorkie does not have any major health concerns but it may sometimes suffer the same
-
conditions as other toy breeds because of their small leg joints.
-
Rarely these dogs have been reported to suffer from hypoglycemia.
-
4.
-
The Chorkie has a very low to no shed coat, making the Chorkie suitable for families and
-
those who suffer from allergies.
-
Note that no dog is guarenteed hypoallergenic, but Chrokies are favorable for some allergy
-
sufferers.
-
Even though the Chorkie has a low-shedding coat it is necessary to brush this dog’s
-
hair on a regular basis so it does not get matted.
-
This dog tends to get dirty very quickly however; too much bathing can cause its skin to become
-
irritated.
-
Sometimes it is sufficient to just wipe the Chorkie down with a wet cloth instead of giving
-
it a full bath.
-
3.
-
While the Chorkie may exhibit some shyness or reservation around strangers, it does tend
-
to warm up eventually.
-
They make good watchdogs as they will alert their owners to the presence of strangers.
-
2.
-
As with other designer dog breeds, the Chorkie is not recognized by the American Kennel Club.
-
It is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the International
-
Designer Canine Registry and the Designer Breed Registry.
